Our customer asked:

I have a dog who has been diagnosed with partial kidney failure. He is on medication to see if they can stabilise him but I want to try and give him a natural diet instead of prepared dog food. I also want to make sure he gets all the right vitamins/minerals he needs but obviously don't want to give him anything that will make his condition worse. Is there any that you would recommend?

Our reply:

Both Rubenal and Ipakitine are good supplements for a dog with impaired kidney function. Other than that you should make up a diet without too much protein, and the protein you do include should be of "good quality". Cottage cheese, chicken and white fish are suitable. A range of mixed, cooked vegetables and quite a lot of rice or pasta would also be good to include. On top of that I would use a http://www.viovet.co.uk/Vionate_Mineral_Vitamin_Supplement/c1354/">Vionate. If your dog is drinking and urinating quite a lot, which is common with kidney problems, then extra B vitamins can help. Yeast tablets are often given for this, or a small amount of Marmite.
