I would like to buy some liquid paraffin for my dog. He tends to become constipated and his motions are sometimes very hard and difficult to pass. What is the dose rate and how should I use it?

Our reply:

The usual dose for liquid paraffin is one to two tablespoons with a meal. The dose is not critical. This can be repeated as often as needed to relieve the constipation. However you should not give it with every meal for an extended period (weeks) or you can reduce the vitamin absorption in the gut. It is fine to do it with every meal for a few days if you have to. Then you can give it 2 or 3 days per week if you need to long-term (note: it is just best not to give every day forever.) It is also best not to dose liquid paraffin directly into the mouth as it is difficult to swallow if it is not mixed with some food.
