Our custoemr asked:

Can you advise what chews or treats I can safely give my Westie who has recently been diagnosed with Diabetes. He has Royal Canin low carbohydrate dog food and weight control biscuits which I order from you. I used to give him dentasticks for his dental health but understand they contain high amounts of sugar so have stopped these. He does like hide chews, but these seem to encourage him to drink and as they are a food supplement I wonder if it is safe to give him these, I am also keen to keep his weight under control. I would be grateful for your advice please.

Our rely:

Hide chews are not a bad choice for diabetics, because they are high in protein and low in carbohydrate. They might be a bit salty, which encourages thirst, but gnawing at a hide chew for a while is thirsty work anyway. It is also very good for the teeth.

Good alternative chews would be:
Burns Dried Carrot treats (high in fibre, 100% carrot, some natural sugar but well balanced by the fibre.)
Pet Munchies Chicken Strips (or one of the others in the range. High protein, low carbohydrate.)
