Non-prescription Arthritis Medication

Our customer asked:

My dog has prescribed Carprieve for arthritis which my vet has diagnosed. Is there a non prescription alternative for carprieve?

Our reply:

All the good drugs of this type are prescription-only. Most of the none-prescription products are nutritional supplements which do help many dogs, but are generally regarded as less potent. They are intended and and are safe for long-term administration.  Seraquin or Yumove would be popular examples. The nearest equivalent to carprieve which is non-prescription would be Pardale-V, but it is not as effective and can only be used for a few days at a time. Continuous use might cause gut or other problems. If your dog suffers from arthritis or similar "wear and tear" type joint problems but is not too bad, then I would certainly try Seraquin or Yumove, but if your dog has significant mobility problems, then prescription medication is likely to be of greatest benefit.
