The Berger de Picard originates from...
Originally a French herding breed from Picardy, the Berger Picard or Picardy Shepherd is a rare breed with very few examples even in its native country. There is some speculation about when the Picard was first seen, although some date it as far back as the 9th century. Others insist it is related to the Briard and Beauceron, which are much more widely recognised. With many of these dogs existing on the farms of north-eastern France, it is no surprise that the ravages of WWI and WWII nearly sent the Picardy into extinction.
The Berger de Picard is characteristed by...
A charming-looking breed with a short, shaggy coat in fawn or brindle, the Picard is medium-sized with upright, high-set ears and bushy eyebrows.
The average Berger de Picard...
Berger de Picards are typically a fun personality with intelligence and energy. Sometimes mellow and reserved around strangers, it is important to ensure socialisation from a young age to give this breed confidence around new faces. Fussiness is also common in the breed, particularly when it comes to diet. A lovely companion dog, the Picard is sure to be loyal and fun-loving, with a typical life expectancy of 12-14 years. Not excessive barkers.
Weaknesses...
Health-wise, the Picard is fairly robust, with few genetic health dispositions. However, hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy are noted in the breed with some prevalence.
